Fred Roberts, 78, of Deckerville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 31, 2026. He was born on February 2, 1948, in Deckerville, Michigan, to the late Clarence and Mavis (Stepka) Roberts. Fred proudly served his country as a Vietnam Veteran and was a dedicated member of his community. He served as Commander of American Legion Post 516, where he enjoyed the camaraderie and friendships he built over the years. Fred was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He is survived by his children, Jason (Kendra), Aaron, and Kim; his grandchildren, Ryleigh and Charli; the mother of his children, Delores Roberts; and his siblings, Betty (Jim) Bush, Doris (Joe) Henige, Sr. Rose Roberts, Mark (Patty) Roberts, Gerald (Debbie) Roberts, Tom Roberts, Marie (Tim) Graham, Joe (Debbie) Roberts, and John Roberts. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Mavis Roberts; his sister-in-law, Laurie; and Bud, his faithful four-legged best friend. Fred enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. He could often be found riding around on his mule, cutting grass, sharing a drink, and “shooting the shit” with friends. He loved spending time with those around him and never met a stranger for long. Anyone who knew Fred knew one thing for certain—never call him between 11:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Those hours were strictly reserved for his daily nap, a tradition he took very seriously. Fred will be remembered for his sense of humor, his loyalty to family and friends, his service to his country, and the countless memories he created with those fortunate enough to know him.
In honor of Fred, family and friends are encouraged to remember him in their own special way—whether that’s taking a ride through the countryside, spending time with friends, sharing a laugh and a story, or even enjoying an afternoon nap between 11:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. He certainly wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
His family will cherish the stories, laughter, and love he leaves behind, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 7th, 2026, at Peshek Family Funeral Home-Apsey Chapel in Deckerville.
Fred’s funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 8, 2026, at the funeral home. Family will be present to receive visitors beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial to follow at Downing Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to the American Legion Post 516 or The Deckerville Community Center.
