John L. Shanks, age 71, of Port Sanilac, died unexpectedly Friday December 9, 2016 as a result of a farming accident. He was born July 4, 1945 the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Washe) Shanks. John grew up in Forester Township and attended Deckerville Community Schools, graduating in 1963. He was a lifelong area farmer, and maintenance man for St. Mary Catholic Church, Port Sanilac. He enjoyed hunting and was a member of the Sanilac Sportsmen's Club. He was a long time parishioner of St. Mary Catholic Church. On April 4, 1975 he married Miss. Helen Gauthier in Pontiac, MI. Together they raised three sons and one daughter, Joseph Shanks of Manton, Kevin and Cari Shanks of Saginaw, and Rodney and Nichole of Salem, Rosemary and Michael Weilemann of Kansas. He is also survived by his wife Helen of Port Sanilac, eight grandchildren, one brother, Dennis and Cinda Shanks of Onsted, three sisters, Nancy and Jim Martin of AZ., Diane Shanks of Port Sanilac, Shirley and Rick Theobald of Deckerville and several nieces and nephews. A funeral mass to honor the life of John L. Shanks will be held at 11:00 AM., Tuesday in St. Mary Catholic Church, Fr. Donald Eppenbrock will officiate. Burial will be in Washington Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 AM. Tuesday in the church. Memorial donations may be given to the Family Discretionary Fund.
