Larry J. Flanagan, age 77 of Deckerville, died Tuesday December 3, 2024, in McKenzie Memorial Hospital, Sandusky. He was born November 22, 1947, in Sandusky the oldest son of the late George and Agnes (Drabek) Flanagan. Larry grew up on a farm west of Deckerville and attended Deckerville Community Schools graduating in 1966. After graduation he joined the Marines and served in Vietnam where he was awarded two Purple Hearts. He was discharged from the Marines on July 25, 1969. On November 29, 1969, he married Miss Yvonne Tobi. She preceded in death January 20, 2018. Larry was a self-employed cement and wood basement contractor. He worked several years for United Construction and most notable was the thirty plus years that he was the sexton of Downing Cemetery. There was hardly a time that you could go to the cemetery and not see Larry and Yvonne working on the cemetery grounds. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting ice fishing and gardening. He was a member of the Sickles-Arnold Legion Post 516 in Deckerville and was always part of the Memorial Day ceremony at the cemetery every year. Larry is survived by one son, Ryan (Kelly) Flanagan of Deckerville; two daughters, Lisa Heft of Grass Lake and Lorie (Chris) Soule of Croswell; five grandchildren, Courtney Soule, McKenzie, and Madison Heft, Branden Soule and Emilie Flanagan; two brothers, Dennis (Cheryl) Flanagan of Port Huron and Russell (Diane) Flanagan of Deckerville, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter Alexzandria Heft; one brother Richard Flanagan and one nephew Bryan Flanagan. A funeral service to honor the life of Larry J. Flanagan will be held at 11:00 am Saturday December 7, 2024, in the Apsey Funeral Home. Pastor Jerry Griggs will officiate. Burial will be in Downing Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM-8:00 PM Friday and from 10:00 AM Saturday until the time of service. Memorials may be given to the Sickles-Arnold Legion Post 516 or the Downing Cemetery.
