Magdalena Helen Schmitt

Our hearts are saddened by the unexpected loss of a dearest Mother and Grandmother Magdalena Schmitt known to many as “Helen”.

Helen Schmitt age 85, of Deckerville, Michigan passed away Thursday July 11, 2024, at Covenant Hospital in Saginaw.

Helen was born July 28, 1938, in Sandusky. Her family then moved to Detroit years later where she lived and met her husband, Robert J. Schmitt. They raised their family there until they moved back to the Thumb of Michigan in 1973.

Helen worked various jobs in the surrounding area, but one of her favorites was working at Ballentine Pharmacy where she was an employee for over 15 years. She loved her customers and her community.

One of her passions when she retired was to bake. She then became the “Cookie Lady” of Deckerville who loved to share her cookies, “Rum balls” and her newest treat, Sweet Breads that she lovingly made and gave out to family, friends and even strangers.

Helen is survived by her children Terri (Paul) Campbell, Cheri (Mike) Titus, Robert Schmitt, Mark (Peg) Schmitt, Larry (Karrie) Schmitt. Grandchildren; Magdalena (Jeremy) Fischer, Angela Titus, Robbie (Dayna) Schmitt, Travis (Jesse) Schmitt, Zach Schmitt, Lisa (Raul) Schmitt, Lukas Schmitt, Ean Schmitt, Ethan Schmitt, Evan Schmitt, Emma Schmitt and Ash Gulia, great grandchildren; Tyler Soehren, Isabella Soehren, Ona, Atreyu, Tristan, Auryn, Alexanne, Arabella and Nolan Fischer, Olivia, Eli and Maverick Schmitt.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert J. Schmitt of 54 years, their daughter Marie and she is the last sibling of two brothers and seven sisters

A private showing was held July 13, 2024, in the Apsey Funeral Home of Deckerville, with a Memorial Service being planned for September 21, 2024, at Sanilac County Lexington Park from 2:00-4:00 PM.

She will be missed immensely by her family and friends who knew her and were touched by her kindness and generosity.
