Phillip J. Messman passed away peacefully at his home in Deckerville on January 28, 2025, his 60th birthday. A cherished father, dedicated businessman, and loving son.
Born on January 28, 1965, in Deckerville, Michigan, to Jeanette and Jacob Messman Jr., Phil grew up on the family farm alongside his sister, developing a deep appreciation for agriculture that would stay with him throughout his life. His early years were spent working at the Tri-City Landfill and on his grandfather's farms, where he cultivated his lifelong passion for tractors and machinery.
Phil earned his bachelor's degree in business from Spring Arbor University. Phil embarked on a successful career in retail management, overseeing operations at major chains including Ace Hardware and Quality Farm & Fleet. Later, he transitioned to the insurance industry, where he owned and operated his own insurance office for two decades.
Above all else, Phil was a dedicated father to his three sons. He consistently prioritized their needs and interests, whether it meant shooting hoops on the basketball court, working together under the hood of a car, tailgating at sporting events, or spending time together camping as a family. His extensive collection of vintage cars and comprehensive mechanical knowledge became a cherished point of connection with his children.
In his final years, Phil retired to care for his beloved mother, demonstrating the same selfless dedication that characterized his entire life. Phil's memory will forever remain a blessing to all whose lives he touched. He leaves a legacy of love for God, Family and Friends.
Phil is survived by his three sons: Kyle (LeeAnn) Messman of Portage, Dalton (Casey) Messman of Lowell, and Austin Messman of Lansing; two grandchildren, Reese and Daisy; one sister, Carol (Steve Rosenberg) Messman of NY; and his mother, Jeanette Messman of Deckerville. He walks now with his father Jacob who predeceased him on February 8, 2013.
A funeral service celebrating Phillips’ life and the legacy he leaves behind will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at the Apsey Funeral Home, with Rev. David Frost officiating. The burial will follow at Downing Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Tuesday.
