Robert Dean Patrick, age 79, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026. Born on July 29, 1946, in Dearborn, Robert lived a life defined by dedication to family, service to his country, and a quiet strength that steadied those around him. At the age of 19, Robert answered the call to serve his country, entering the United States Army on October 28, 1965. He completed Basic Training at Fort Knox before continuing to Military Police training at Fort Gordon. Soon after, he traveled by boat to Stuttgart, where he proudly served as a Military Policeman with the 285th MP Battalion. While home on leave, Robert married the love of his life, Elizabeth Ann Causey, on January 21, 1967. Following a honeymoon through Kentucky and Tennessee, the newlyweds began their life together in Germany, where they spent the next 18 months during Robert’s military service. Their marriage became the foundation of a loving family and a partnership built on loyalty, perseverance, and devotion. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Robert began what would become a long and respected career with the University of Michigan Public Safety Department. Starting in November 1971 as a security guard, Robert steadily rose through the ranks through hard work, integrity, and leadership. Over the years he served as Sergeant, Lieutenant, and ultimately retired as Associate Director. Those who worked alongside him knew him as dependable, fair-minded, and deeply committed to the safety and wellbeing of the university community. Outside of work, Robert felt most at home in the outdoors. A lifelong trapper, hunter, fisherman, and nature lover, he found peace and fulfillment in the woods, on the water, and beneath open skies. He had a deep appreciation for wildlife and the quiet beauty of nature, passions that remained with him throughout his life. Robert especially treasured his many adventures traveling through the western United States and Alaska, where he embraced the rugged landscapes and unforgettable experiences that came with them. Whether sharing stories from the trail or planning the next trip, the outdoors was never simply a hobby for Robert — it was part of who he was. Robert also had a passion for collecting beer cans, a hobby he pursued with enthusiasm for decades. An avid collector and longtime member of the Brewery Collectibles Club of America (formerly Beer Can Collectors of America), which he joined in 1976, he enjoyed the friendships, stories, and shared enthusiasm that came with the hobby. His collection reflected not only his appreciation for history and craftsmanship, but also his curiosity and enjoyment of the hunt for unique finds. More than titles or accomplishments, Robert was devoted to the people he loved. He was a steady and dependable presence — someone who listened more than he spoke, showed up when needed, and found joy in the everyday moments shared with family. He carried himself with humility and kindness, leaving lasting impressions not through grand gestures, but through consistency, compassion, and care. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Patrick, whose memory remained close to his heart throughout the years. Robert is survived by his daughters, Sara (Brad) Patrick, Tara (John) McCrackin, and Caran (Paul) Patrick; and his cherished grandchildren, Taylor McCrackin, Griffin Ruiter, Meredith Ruiter, and Cadin Newby; his longtime companion, Marilyn McCowell; and Astro the Wonder Dog. His family was his greatest pride, and he treasured watching each new generation grow. Those who knew Robert will remember his love for nature and his sense of humor. He leaves behind a legacy of service, devotion, and enduring love that will continue through the family and friends who were fortunate enough to know him.
