Robert R. "Bob" Tanton Sr., a cherished pillar of the Deckerville community, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2025, at the age of 85, after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Born on August 23, 1939, in Deckerville, Bob was a man of the earth, both in his profession and his passions.
Bob's early years were spent in the town of his birth, where he was raised by his late parents, Robert Tanton and Alice (Dasharion) Brown. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gayle, his son Robert Jr., his daughter Cheryl, and his brother Richard. His legacy continues through his devoted son Chris, his adored grandchildren Lea Porkop, Kyle Tanton, Torrey Tanton, and Annmarie Tanton, and his cherished great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews who will fondly remember his generous spirit.
For over three decades, Bob was a respected agricultural teacher at Deckerville Community School, sharing his extensive knowledge and love for farming with countless students. His commitment to education and the agricultural community left a lasting impact that will be remembered by former students and colleagues alike. In addition to his teaching career, Bob was also a dedicated local farmer, working the land with a reverence that spoke of his deep connection to nature.
Bob's enthusiasm for the outdoors extended beyond his professional life. An avid bow hunter, he found solace and joy in the quiet of the woods. He was a regular at 3D shoots, where his skill and sportsmanship were well-known. Trout fishing was another of Bob's enjoyments, offering him tranquil moments by the water where he could reflect and relax.
Those who knew Bob would describe him as a loving, generous, and thoughtful man. His warm presence and kind-hearted nature made him a friend to many. He had a way of making each person he encountered feel valued and heard, a testament to his genuine character.
Throughout his life, Bob cultivated a family atmosphere not only at home but also within the wider community. His open-door policy and the ever-present twinkle in his eye made his home a welcoming place where laughter and stories were abundant.
As he returns to the earth he so dearly loved, Bob leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His influence will continue to ripple through the community, in the fields he farmed, the students he taught, and the natural world he so passionately protected.
The Tanton family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and medical staff at Autumnwood, who supported Bob during his final months. Their dedication and compassion provided comfort and solace to Bob and his loved ones.
